FRAXEL® DUAL

The results of a few sessions of Fraxel® DUAL are truly remarkable. I had so many discolored patches and brown spots along with wrinkles, making my skin look blotchy and old, that I really despaired of ever having clear bright skin again. But now I have it with a great side effect, a smoother texture. —AA, Englewood

Ask Dr. Goldberg

“Fraxel® DUAL is really two lasers because it utilizes two wavelengths, something the original Fraxel® did not do, and so it can treat skin both superficially and in its deeper layers. Easy to manipulate, it allows me to tailor its use to a variety of conditions and lifestyles. For patients in their 30s or 40s with mild sun damage and the beginning of fine lines, the Fraxel® DUAL can even out pigmentation and improve the fine lines. For patients in their 50s and 60s with greater sun damage and deeper wrinkles, the surface skin changes can be addressed along with the deeper wrinkles, even scars.” —Dr. Michele Grodberg

IF YOU’RE CONSIDERING FRAXEL® LASER RESURFACING, HERE ARE DR. GRODBERG’S ANSWERS TO A FEW FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

“Fraxel® treatment uses patented fractional technology to target damaged skin with microscopic laser columns that penetrate deep into the skin. The laser treats only a fraction of tissue at a time, leaving the surrounding tissue intact, which promotes rapid healing. This stimulates your body’s own natural healing process, replacing the old and damaged cells with fresh, glowing, healthy skin.”

“Depending on the size, location and condition of the area to be treated, Fraxel treatment can take as little as 20 minutes. However, we ask that you reserve at least 2 hours for your appointment. We ask you to arrive early to topically numb the areas to be treated. Sixty minutes before a treatment, your skin is cleansed and then numbed with a topical anesthetic ointment applied to the treatment area. The procedure takes 20 to 25 minutes for a full face.”

“The number to treatments you will need depends on your goals and desired outcomes as well as your lifestyle. We will work with you to weigh the aggressiveness of treatment with the downtime associated. Typically, patients receive their desired outcomes in 3 to 6 treatments. After one session you’ll see a difference, but clinical studies suggest that on average, an effective treatment regimen is 3 to 5 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart. Depending on your condition and schedule, we may choose to space treatment sessions further apart. Results are immediate and progressive, with optimal improvement usually visible in 6 months.”

“Fraxel® lasers treat women and men of all ages and skin color. Fraxel® treatment also works on delicate skin areas like the neck, chest and hands.”

“Your skin will feel softer, look brighter and show more even skin tone. Other benefits of treatment may include: smoother, fresher, younger-looking skin, improved tone and texture erasing of unwanted brown spots and reduced fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes.”

“The results of treatment are both immediate and progressive. Soon after the treatment, the surface of your skin will feel softer, look brighter and show more even tone. The next 3 to 6 months will bring more improvement as the deeper layers of the skin continue to heal. Results can last for years depending on your age and skin condition.”

“Most patients describe an increased sensation of heat during the treatment. The topical anesthesia minimizes discomfort and then cold air is used on the treatment area during the procedure. After the treatment, most patients feel like they have a sunburn, which usually diminishes in 1 to 3 hours.”

““During the first 24 hours after treatment, your skin may feel as though it is sunburned, and it will appear pink or red. You can wear makeup to reduce the sunburned appearance. Your skin may bronze and peel over the next few days or two, depending on the depth of treatment.”

“Swelling and redness are the most common side effects from Fraxel® DUAL treatment. Any swelling is typically minimal and subsides within a day or two and any redness typically fades within a few days. Other temporary side effects may include minor itching, dry skin, peeling or flaking, and a bronzed skin appearance. There is a limited risk of infection, hyperpigmentation or scarring. The intensity and duration of side effects depend on the aggressiveness of treatment and on your particular healing characteristics. Fraxel® treatment can be tailored to your desired outcome. We’ll work with you to determine the best option to fit your lifestyle.”
