REMOVAL OF AGE SPOTS & BROWN SPOTS

“Dr. Grodberg is remarkably up to date on all the advances in dermatological cosmetic procedures and provides personalized treatment plans that cater to the individualized needs of her patients. I’m so happy with the way the skin on my face and hands looks now. I used to have a mix of freckles and spots that were so unsightly. The combination of treatments she suggested worked so well.” —GK, Morristown

“There are a variety of ways we can treat age and brown spots. Some spots can be treated with Fraxel® DUAL , Clear + Brilliant Laser or with Intense Pulse Light (IPL). Others can be lightened using a variety of lasers, cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen) or a mild acid peel." —Dr. Michele Grodberg

If you’re considering removal of brown spots, here are Dr. Grodberg answers to a few frequently asked questions:

WHAT TYPES OF PIGMENTED LESIONS CAN BE TREATED?

“Examples of pigmented lesions that can be lightened or removed include: lentigines, which are flat, brown spots on the skin and present on skin with frequent sun exposure; keratoses, which are slightly elevated pigmented spots often found on the back and hands; freckles, which are brownish spots on the skin common on people with fair skin and Dermatosis Papulosis Nigra, small, dark brown bumps seen primarily on people of Asian or African descent.”

WHAT WILL THE AREA LOOK LIKE AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

“Most procedures that treat brown spots will cause a darkening of the treated lesion. This may take approximately 10 days to resolve. Generally no post-treatment care is necessary but it is important to avoid the sun following these procedures.”

CAN LARGE AREAS BE TREATED?

Fraxel® DUAL , Clear + Brilliant and the Ellipse® I²PL® are both ideal for treating large areas of altered pigmentation such as the face, chest or backs of hands.”

WHAT POSTOPERATIVE CARE IS NECESSARY?

“Sun avoidance is the most important factor in treating pigmented lesions, because even the slightest exposure of the treated area to the sun may result in repigmentation. Usually the treated area is kept moist with a heavy moisturizer for a short period of time. Some patients may also be instructed to use a gentle exfoliator after one week.”
