KYBELLA

“The little pouch of fat under my chin was driving me crazy and making me feel like I looked fat. It didn’t respond to diet or exercise, but I saw a pretty noticeable result after only two treatments of KYBELLA®.”—TC, Englewood

Ask Dr. Goldberg

“KYBELLA® is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat beneath the chin by physically destroying fat cells. The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Fat cleared from the treatment area is processed through your body’s natural metabolism.” —Dr. Michele Grodberg

IF YOU’RE CONSIDERING KYBELLA® TREATMENTS, HERE ARE DR. GRODBERG’S ANSWERS TO A FEW FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

“This fat, also known as submental fullness or a double chin, can be caused by genetics, weight gain, aging and other factors. Often, even with diet or exercise, it may not go away and it could make you appear older or heavier than you actually are. In reported clinical studies, 79% of people treated with KYBELLA® had improved satisfaction with the appearance of the area beneath their chin, compared with 34% of people treated with placebo, 12 weeks after their last treatment.”

“Each treatment session consists of a series of injections into the fat under your chin during an office visit. Typically, the precise area to be treated is carefully identified and measured and then the area is numbed. The KYBELLA® is then injected."

“I determine the number of treatment session needed based on the amount and distribution of the patient's submental fat and their personal treatment goals. Up to six treatments may be needed, spaced no less than a month apart, however, many patients are satisfied after just two treatments. Once the aesthetic response is achieved, no further treatment is typically administered.”

“For most patients, downtime occurs most commonly after the first treatment session. You should be able to resume your normal daily activities, but are likely to have some swelling, so keep that in mind when scheduling your treatment time. We apply a cold pack to the area after the treatment which helps to decrease the swelling and minimize any discomfort.”

“KYBELLA® can in rare instances cause serious side effects, including nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness and trouble swallowing. These side effects were identified in early studies and the treatment protocol was adjusted to avoid them. The most common side effects include: swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness.”

“Your neck can benefit from a variety of procedures that we offer at MGMD Dermatology. Skin tightening with Exilis can help with loose skin and the Excel V laser can address red and brown pigmentation from sun damage. Together, we can make a treatment plan that makes sense for you.”
