PRP for Hair Loss

“I was so upset by my thinning hair.  Treatment with PRP has really made a difference and I’m so glad I gave it a try.”  ”—AB, Norwood

Ask Dr. Goldberg

“PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is a nonsurgical hair-loss treatment that involves injecting platelets, extracted from your own blood, into your scalp to restore thinning hair.  Research shows that PRP can stimulate the follicles and slow the rate of hair loss.  In some cases, it may even help regrow hair. ” —Dr. Michele Grodberg

Eclipse PRP® (the protocol used at MGMD Dermatology) is close to a physiologic pH, which means the PRP product is less likely to cause a stinging or burning sensation. There may be some temporary discomfort or possible redness and inflammation at the application site, but typically quickly resolves. We also use a Zimmer Cooler to cool the skin during the injections which helps with any discomfort.

  • "Step 1: Using a special blood collection tube, we draw a small amount of blood - similar to what is required for a lab test.
  • Step 2: The tube containing your drawn blood is placed into a centrifuge and then spun at a high speed, which causes the platelets to separate from the other blood components.
  • Step 3: Once the platelets are concentrated, they can be applied to the treatment point. PRP can be applied topically to the skin, usually after microneedling or fractional resurfacing, or via injection.”

The blood draw takes a couple of minutes, followed immediately by a 10-minute centrifugation. Application time varies based on the procedure.

"Since the Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is produced from a patient’s own blood, there is virtually no risk of an allergic reaction or rejection."

The process of PRP extraction and certain treatments using PRP have been approved by the FDA.  PRP treatments for hair regrowth, acne scarring, and facial rejuvenation have not yet been specifically approved by the FDA and are currently the subject of numerous scientific studies and research with very promising early results.”
