Hair loss is common—but the reason it happens isn’t always simple. At MGMD Dermatology, we begin with a careful evaluation to determine the type and potential causes of hair loss, then develop an individualized treatment plan based on your diagnosis, medical history, and goals.
Treatment may include prescription medications, topical therapies, red light therapy, nutritional support, and in-office treatments. Often, the best approach combines several strategies that address hair loss in different ways.
“Hair loss is an area where diagnosis really matters. There are many different causes, and what works for one type of hair loss may not be appropriate for another. My approach is to first understand why a patient is losing hair and then put together a treatment plan using the therapies that make sense for that individual. We have more options for treating hair loss than ever before, and I often combine medical treatment with supportive therapies to give patients a comprehensive approach.” —Dr. Michele Grodberg

To help us make the most of your appointment, please complete our Hair Loss Questionnaire before your visit.
The questionnaire asks about the timing and pattern of your hair loss, medical history, medications, recent illnesses or stressors, nutrition, hormonal changes, and other factors that may contribute to hair shedding or thinning.

“Medical treatment depends on the diagnosis and the individual patient.
Minoxidil remains one of the most established treatments for pattern hair loss and may be used topically or, in appropriately selected patients, as a low-dose oral medication.
Other prescription options may include spironolactone, finasteride, dutasteride, or medications directed at autoimmune or inflammatory causes of hair loss.
These treatments are not appropriate for everyone. Dr. Grodberg will discuss the potential benefits, risks, and alternatives based on your diagnosis and medical history.”
“Low-level light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate activity within the hair follicle. Clinical studies support its use for certain types of pattern hair loss, and it can be particularly useful as an adjunct to other treatments.
Because it works through a different mechanism than medications, red light therapy can often be incorporated into a broader hair-restoration regimen.”
“REVIAN RED is an at-home light therapy system that uses medical-grade LEDs and two wavelengths of light. The cordless cap provides full scalp coverage with a 10-minute daily treatment.
We like red light therapy because it is noninvasive, easy to incorporate into a daily routine, and can be used alongside many other hair-loss treatments.
REVIAN RED is available through MGMD Dermatology.

“KeraFactor is a lightweight, water-based topical scalp serum containing a proprietary complex of biomimetic peptides and other ingredients designed to support the scalp and hair follicle environment.
We use KeraFactor primarily as an adjunct to an individualized hair-loss treatment program rather than as a replacement for established medical therapies.
The at-home serum is non-sticky and easy to incorporate into a hair-care routine. It can also be paired with REVIAN RED light therapy.”
“Yes. For patients who want to take a more intensive approach, MGMD offers an in-office treatment using a more concentrated KeraFactor formulation.
The serum is delivered using Juvasonic, a needle-free device designed to enhance topical application to the scalp, followed by red light therapy.
Because the treatment is needle-free, there is minimal discomfort and no downtime associated with microneedling.
In-office KeraFactor treatments are typically used as an adjunct to a broader hair-restoration program.”
“Nutrition can play an important role in healthy hair growth, particularly when there is a deficiency or inadequate intake of key nutrients.
We may recommend laboratory testing for iron, vitamin D, thyroid function, and other factors when indicated. Identified deficiencies should be appropriately corrected rather than simply taking multiple supplements without knowing whether they are needed.
For selected patients, we recommend Viviscal PRO, a nutritional supplement formulated to support healthy hair growth. Clinical studies suggest benefit for some patients with thinning hair, although supplements should be considered supportive therapy rather than a substitute for diagnosing and treating the underlying cause of hair loss.
Adequate protein intake is also important for normal hair growth, particularly during periods of dieting or significant weight loss.”
“Hair grows slowly, so almost every effective hair-loss treatment requires patience.
Decreased shedding may be noticed first. Visible changes in density and growth generally take several months, and many treatments need to be continued to maintain their benefit.
We will discuss what is realistic for your particular diagnosis and treatment plan.”
“Yes. In fact, combination therapy is often an important part of our approach.
Medical treatments, red light therapy, topical scalp treatments, nutritional support, and selected in-office procedures work in different ways. When appropriate, combining them may allow us to address several aspects of hair loss at the same time.
That does not mean every patient needs every treatment. Your regimen should be based on your diagnosis, health history, preferences, and goals.”
There is rarely a one-size-fits-all solution to hair loss.
At MGMD Dermatology, we begin with the diagnosis. From there, Dr. Grodberg develops an individualized plan that may include: Medical Treatment
Prescription topical or oral medications when appropriate.
Red Light Therapy
At-home treatment with REVIAN RED as a noninvasive adjunct to support hair growth.
Topical Scalp Support
KeraFactor serum for patients who want to incorporate an additional topical therapy.
In-Office Treatment
More concentrated KeraFactor paired with needle-free Juvasonic delivery and red light therapy.
Nutrition & Supplementation
Correction of identified deficiencies, attention to adequate protein intake, and Viviscal PRO when appropriate.
Hair restoration takes time. Our goal is to develop a treatment program that is medically appropriate, manageable, and sustainable for you.
